The most boring book in the world unveiling »HotelClub Travel Blog

Almost two years ago made a "Lonely Planet" author with a tell-all book about "Lonely Planet" sensation . Large parts of the content were just invented, it was called. After reading the book you believe only half of the guide.

The book "Do Travel Writers Go To Hell?" By Thomas Kohnstamm there for a few months on German and I noticed recently happened to be in the hands. Although I have never in life of a travel guide "Lonely Planet" obsessed (in my opinion too heavy, too thick and too expensive), but I wanted to know what because as revealed in his book Kohnstamm for grievances. Finally looked at the time "Lonely Planet" pretty in distress, whatever this official statement proves.

I wonder why! Kohnstamm-Cover Because the revelations were not half as bad as I had feared - and the book pretty boring for the most part. Under the unspeakably long German title "The absolutely honest and completely shameless confessions of a professional guide-author" (you would not simply translate the English title?) Tells Kohnstamm over 300 pages of his first contract for "Lonely Planet", a rice leader to work on Brazil. Real revelations are found but rarely - preferably Kohnstamm told of how he slept on different drugs with as many women.
The few "scandals" that he "revealed" Finally, one can be summarized as follows:

  • * For a comprehensive research to revise the existing Brazil Guide for a new edition, Kohnstamm had only two months - too little for such a big country, also have next time for research also are included to write another time.
Quote: "Between what the author should provide, and what it can realistically accomplish in the time available and the available budget, a huge gap."
  • * Not every restaurant that is recommended in the Guide, Kohnstamm tested themselves - often had a look at the menu suffice. On the one hand he could not afford because of the low budget, constantly eating at the restaurant, on the other hand he had in the little time he had, several times a day to eat lunch and dinner to test all restaurants.
  • * Kohnstamm apparently earned so little that he even (with little success) to drug dealing drugs "had" to come to Brazil to make ends meet.
  • * Because of the small budget he began to invitations from hotels, restaurants and bars to take - what is a "Lonely Planet" Author prohibited so that he remains incorrupt. Thus, a restaurant Kohnstamm finally obtained the recommendation of "good service". He has, however, consumed nothing - but it slept with the waitress.
  • * Kohnstamm criticized in principle the development of "Lonely Planet" from an insider's guide for backpackers to mainstream leaders.
Quote: "In the past, if Lonely Planet 'frank advice about sex and drugs and told people how to get the cheapest by. Today the books are so little jostle as possible, you have to tell them how great and exciting it is everywhere all the time -. Unsavory details of reality are rather undesirable "

    • Kerala (India) is amazingly green and has great beaches - abt 4.5 hour flight.

Turkey has areas that are green, hilly - cold in winter anyway - 4 hour flight.

Both of these two destinations can be done pretty cheaply.
