The Lake symboltext Brianese Anna and Alberto Campanile - photo Alberto Campanile To Bled,a small village on the edge of the Triglav National Park is the most famous lake in Slovenia. At the center of a territory intact, full of natural wonders and monuments legendary.
It is a tiny teardrop-shaped green handkerchief,a wad of trees nestled in the blue of the lake.A backdrop of mountains and a castle perched on a steep rocky outcrop frame the Blejski Island, the only island in Slovenia. It is an idyllic, picture postcard, one of the most celebrated and represented in the catalogs of Slovenia.Happy this part of the region Gorenjska fascinated Marshal Tito, who repeatedly welcomed politicians and eminent exponents of the cultural life at Villa Bled, but also charmed the crowned heads and eminent writers, such as Arthur Miller and Agatha Christie.Prešeren, one of the most important romantic poets of Europe, lived in the first half of the nineteenth century, wrote: "the province of Carniola, are so many beautiful places, but none so worthy to take on the face the face of heaven."
Dominating the scene is the Castle, residence of the bishops of Bressanone for about eight centuries, built in the ninth century and largely rebuilt in the sixteenth century after the severe damage caused by an earthquake and the uprising of 1511.Today the manor is the hub of cultural activity in the country and in the summer, concerts are held in the upper courtyard of classical music, while some are open all year round shops,a fine restaurant and a museum depicting the history of the lake from prehistory to the last century. From the Castle, perched on a cliff 124 meters high well, you have a superb view, especially at night with illuminated buildings.
The lake around the church
In autumn, when the air is cooler, the morning mists often hide the surface of the lake, but not the mountains.Perched atop a hill on the island of Bled, the bell tower of the church of the Assumption stands above the mists. The landscape is fascinating, fabulous. Back to mind an ancient legend: once the chapel of the Madonna stood among the meadows, the men did not bother to protect it with a fence,so animals had free access to the shrine. As punishment,God flooded pastures: thus was born the island. In fact, the first Christian church in the island was built in the ninth century,in a place already inhabited by Slavs in the seventh century BC and, before that, the man of the Neolithic. The Shrine of the Assumption, the Marijino vnebovzetje for Slovenians, can be reached in pletna, traditional rowing boat with a flat bottom. From the landing on the southern side of the Island of Bled,a staircase of 99 steps leads to soaring Gothic tower and the church.
The number of tourists climb to admire the eighteenth-century altar with statues of Henry II and Cunegonde and some fragments of frescoes, but also for playing the "wishing bell".According to legend,in the first half of the sixteenth century,Polyxena, the widow of a young man killed by robbers and then thrown into the lake, then melting of the jewels to make a small bell for the church of the island.A storm sank the boat carrying the gift for the Virgin, then the woman alienated all his property,he took vows and retired to the convent.Upon learning this, the Pope was crowned who donated a new bell in Bled.It is said that those who play see fulfilled their desires: just believe in it,but all three times to pull the rope that descends into the church.
The fortune of Bled is linked to the generosity of nature, which in addition to the beauty of the landscape a precious hot spring gushed out from the bottom of the lake.In the seventeenth century the historian Johann Weichard Valvasor in the volume Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, emphasizes the beneficial properties of the local waters. In the eighteenth century their properties were already widely acclaimed, despite the questionable, and fortunately never completed, project Ignac Novak who proposed to drain the lake to get clay and arable land. The tourism intensified in the second half of the nineteenth century, thanks to a Swiss doctor Arnold Rikli. It was he who enhance the beauty and healthiness of the place and to begin the construction of a resort and to appreciate at a larger public properties of the thermal waters, still recommended to obese people or patients suffering from sleep disorders or diseases senile. But that's not all,the eminent Swiss physician understood the great potential for tourism in Bled, that condensed in the slogan: "the water is of course useful, but most of it the air is even more light."

Calendar. I just watched some of Rick Steve's outing in the Slovenia area. Now that the area is safe for tourism, and seeing how stunning the country side is, i would love to see some great pics from there and the USA.
