November 18 I and P. leave at six in the morning to Maribor via Munich and Graz.maribor_cidade.jpg At the airport in Graz, Austria, the bags came in a flash and waiting for us was Peter, a student of political science Slovenian who had lived some time in France, traveled in northern Europe and we showed some peculiarities of passage of Austria to Slovenia. We were staying at the comfortable hotel Orel even in the old center of the second largest city in Slovenia.maribor_kinoudarnik.jpg On the first day we explored Maribor and we ended up enjoy a great meal in the Castle Square, between a delectable entrees we tasted a good local red wine and the meal consisted of two very tasty risottos.

On Friday, while P. was exploring the town, I went to the movies Udarnik hear the first session of the symposium which was participating, "Re-play: Cinema and Video Games" , organized in cooperation with the University of Maribor, with design and programming Melita Zajc.maribor_melita_viktorija.jpg The first session had two presentations of Slovenian students, Viktorija Gošnak on the theme "Women in games: fri objects or feminist role models?" And Damjan Obal titled "Art of geeks, elves and druids: identity and hierarchy in gaming tribes . " Needless to say, there were few words Slovenian understood but has to follow these authors and see the pictures. The session culminated with Andrew Hall conference on "Avant-Gaming: The Video game the found footage source in experimental film." One of the first things that Andrew Hall asked me when I was presented was whether he knew the Portuguese director Pedro Costa. Astonished, told him yes, and then told me that Andrew had spent some films Portuguese filmmaker in Los Angeles as part of the UCLA's Melnitz Movies. To learn more about this program here . Andrew Hall was also one of the developers of The Festival of (In) Appropriation . The presentation was very interesting, were numerous experimental films, including " Utopia Variations "Gregg Biermann (2008), " She Puppet "Peggy Ahwesh (2001), " Stranger Lones to Town "Jacqueline Goss (2007), an work of Phil Solomon , " The Blockbuster Tapes "Daniel Martinico (2009), " The Game "Tasman Richardson (2007), among others.

That night we all went to dinner at one of the most popular restaurants in Maribor, "Anchor", with Portuguese name, hehehe, where we ate some delicious mixed salads, grilled squid accompanied with spinach puree, stylish Croat, where we drank a delicious wine white region of Maribor. However, Isabelle Arvers had arrived that afternoon. At dinner we discussed travel, cultural habits and curiosities. Then again went to the movies Udarnik hear what remained of performance "8-bit night" which was interesting.

The next day, I was listening to the communication "September 11 and 12: Game of the world and the art of artistic video games" Janez Strehovec once again the language was impenetrable but I managed to follow the authors and I got the impression that lost a good presentation ... especially after having accompanied Janez Strehovec a Lasko beer (unfortunately I drank mint tea) and have exchanged some impressions with him. Try the famous Slovenian beer would be subject to the following day, after my communication, but it was a pleasure to share that moment with a researcher who crosses many distinct knowledge of e-poetry, gaming, through philosophy and cinema. Followed communication Isabelle Arvers , "Machinima as a Political or Artistic" Detournement "of Video Games."

Glad you liked Croatian beer. It is so cheap!
There is suitable accommodation for every budget, From 10$ for rooms and camps, all inclusive cheap socialistic monster hotels to beautiful Hilton right at the Dubrovnik walls, Esplanade in center of Zagreb or Hotel Peristil inside of historic Diocletian palace in Split (double 120 –150$).
Mostar in Bosnia should be also visited, especially during diving competition from the 28 m high bridge. They have done amazing work to restore it after war destruction.
Bled in Slovenia is gorgeous, for a day or two visits. Many private rooms and hotels are located just around the lake.

No problem

Other than travelling with a very young child, you should have no real problems. Slovenia and Croatia are great. You don't say how you plan to travel, but the trains are fine, the roads tend to be narrow with limited highways. Both capital cities are nice small cities (Ljubljana is nicer n my opinion).
Bled (SL) and the rural surrounding area of mountains and lakes are incredible. Dubrovnik (HR) and many of the nearby islands are great, but I encourage you to take the ferry to/from Split versus driving over. You can easily take the train from Zagreb to Split, but the ferry or bus is the option from Split to Dubrovnik

  • Avatar maboo What's the best ski resort for my honeymoon?
Feb 03, 2009 by maboo | Posted in Other - Destinations

My girlfriend and I are getting married later this year and would like to go on a ski trip for our honeymoon - it'll be from boxing day for about 10 nights. What's the best resort (worldwide) for such an occasion? We would like something picturesque with as much chance of snow as possible. Also, can anyone recommend the best hotel to stay in - money (for once) no object.

    • If you're looking worldwide, you get lots of great options. I'll give you two overseas and two here in North America:

Zermatt: At the foot of the Matterhorn. Great town, and lots of high terrain so there wi …
Aspen: The most glitzy American resort, lots of romantic spots and great skiing with Snowbird.

Whistler: Probably the best terrain in North America, and a good ski town for those romantic dinners.

  • Avatar Alex I'm thinking about visiting Slovenia, but I have some questions.?
Jan 07, 2013 by Alex | Posted in Packing & Preparation

I'm thinking about going to Slovenia with a friend at the end of March. There were a few things that I was wondering, though.

    1. Weather- will the weather be good for hiking up in the Bled/Julian Alps area, …on (in the bigger cities, at least) so that I'd only have to learn some basic words in the local language, or should I put myself on a crash-course to get a grasp on the basics before I go?

    Thanks in advance.

    • 1. - I think it will be good for hiking but dress well, because it will be cold. There will probably be some snow, too. This year's winter is quite warm, so I'm not sure.
2 - Transportation - city bus is around 1 …18, and probably can't go to a lot of clubs. In many shops people aren't very strict when it comes to buying alcohol.
5- Yes, English is really widley spoken as second language here, especially among young people.
